Potential prolapse question

idiotshot Oct 11, 2005 12:17 AM

One of my cresties seems to have prolapsed one of his hemipenises this evening. I don't personally know if that is the case or not, but my gf says he's got something pink/red hanging out. The big issue here is that this is not the first time something like this has happened with this particular gecko. A couple of months ago he did what may be the same thing. The next morning it had "sucked back in". I had her do what I did last time and isolate him from all the others in a different room and place him in our sick tank. Are there different types of prolapses? If yes, then what would cause an intestonal prolapse if that is what it is. I know a vet could answer this, but I'm at work and there really are no good vets open at night, or really during the day where I live. If anyone has any insights into this, I'd apreciate the help.

I know that sometimes, when animals mate, the male can become "enlarged and swollen" during copulation. I know that with wolves, for example, the male becomes so swollen he can become stuck inside the female, or he is unable to retract his penis back for period a time. It's a type of sex induced prolapse, I guess you would call it. I'm not sure if this type of thing happens with geckos, but it is common in many species of animal so it is definitely a posibility.

Also I have seen my male Cresteds, as well as other species of geckos, have an intentional short-term prolapse so that they can clean themselves off. This usually only happens for a few minutes at a time though.

I would say, if it goes back in on its own and doesn't seem to cause the gecko any distress, then you should just leave it be. If it happens for extended periods of time, or starts happening often, I'd say his breeding days are probably over.

Hope this helps. I'm no prolapse expert, so you might want to ask a professional anyways. Try just calling a herp vet, even if it is long distance. I'm sure they could at least give you some advice, or reasons why this may be happening. Good luck!

although possible, i doubt it is an intestinal prolapse. it is most likely a hemipene. if it is still out when you get home, soak it in sugar water until you can get to a vet. if he cant get it back in he will amputate it. this happened to one of my males about 7 months ago. he is doing fine now. it cost me about a hundred dollars. keep us posted . here is a pic of what it looks like. the pic was taken a few days after it happened. it was a friday and i couldnt get a vet till monday. if yours looks like this it will probably be amputated.

It did turn out to he a hemipenis prolapse. The cause was due to a "butt" infection. That's what the vet told my gf. I'd like to know more from them about it, so I'll be asking questions about it when I pick him up tomorrow. If it's usefull stuff it will be passed along. Thanks for the info guys. This is the guy who's causing my gf all the stress.

It was a friday night could not find any help, so I soaked in cool sugar water first, and poured ky-jelly all over the area after the soak. Put the chuck in his tank on a towel, NO substrate, nothing dirty or sticky. Keep area clean and Moistened.

After hours, I looked and it was still out but well lubricated, thats the key to keep it moist, if the hempenis dries out, it's NOT good.

Anyway I applied more ky- jelly before going to bed. I mean this guy probably was a slippin and a slidin all night

Anyway thankfully when checked in the morning it had gone in.

Happy Ending, literally

Best wishes for your guy!

Well, just got home with him and he's in good shape. I have a topical antibiotic I get to shoot into his vent for the next 10 days, but everything is where it should be. Fecal was clean and the x-rays were too. Hopefully this will be the last time.
