painted turtle question...

Becky May 18, 2003 10:10 AM

I've been looking through all the care sheets I've read and still haven't found one thing. How long does it take for a hatchling to grow to full size???

It takes them several years.

They can grow faster or slower depending on Diet, captivity, housing, and if they were hibernated. If you over feed a painted and not hibernate him, he will grow much faster then say a wild caught one that eats less and hibernates during the winter months.

full size is difficult for most reptiles, since they usually keep growing till death. Adult size will probly take 2-3 years. I would expect about 3-4 inches of growth first year, then slower after that. Also turtle will grow faster if water is kept 75-80F. Baby painteds like meat, I feed mine fresh fish, cooked chicken, and Reptomin turtle sticks. I keep my hatchling in a 20 gallon long, and will move him to my 55 once his shell hardens up a bit. Im concerned my chubs may make a meal of him since hes only the size of a quarter.
