For the "in-hand" crowd

This is another of Will Still's Ga's. He's an '04 wide banded blackbelly.

Maybe there's something to this in-hand stuff

I've seen lots of pictures of people hand-feeding their snakes. What are the benefits? Or is it just the fascination of watching the feed?

BobBull Oct 11, 2005 12:40 PM

I was feeding last night and thought I'd give it a try. Benefit? maybe Jetzen will step in here. I'm not a true afficianado of the technique. It did allow me to take some close up shots of the snake without chasing him around his enclosure.

That is one heck of a killer eastern! is that the first time you ever did it?

BobBull Oct 12, 2005 07:53 AM

Naw, it wasn't a total virgin experience. I just wanted some close-ups of this guy. He's usually the most active critter and won't settle down. I've got a couple of snakes that will gently take food from my hand.

Eventually I'll mate him to this young lady, I'd like to see some mega-banded youngsters.

To me it means that you have a stress-free chow hound that is comfortable in your hands which is usually an indication that the owner has good husbandry practices.

JETZEN Oct 12, 2005 01:01 AM

It's FUN and ENTERTAINING, try it, you'll like it.

Some people may feel comfortable hand feeding there kings but what or i should say when a younger person or inexperenced keeper trys this with a larger snake say a boa or python and they get in trouble with there life. Granted a kingsnake is not going to take you down but not everyone just owns kings and there are some pretty darn big snakes out there. As far as pros and cons i can't think of any pros but i can think of a bunch of cons and few are these, bites , broken bones , bad feeding habbits ( from post above lol ), dead snake to save your hide from larger ones , sanitary resons , and much more. Those feeding techneques are like sex some things are better kept to yourself ( and mayby a few Buds lol ).

JETZEN Oct 14, 2005 12:12 PM

The inexperienced and the younger keepers should not be keeping large and dangerous snakes.
