simple q about 2 geckos

elliotisme Oct 11, 2005 10:05 AM

Hey, I'm thinking about buying a new gecko for my female, Cleo. I'm going to get another female, and it's about medium size, where as Cleo is full grown.

Do I need to wait until both geckos are the same size before I put them together?

Yes, they need to be kept seperate until they are within 10g of each other. You need to do this not only to make sure your new gecko isn't sick (quarentine), but to avoid having the bigger girl bully or try to make a meal out of the little one.

Also, you need to be aware that even if they are both females, they might not get along. Some females are ok with company, others are not. If there is any fighting going on, they will need to be seperated - probably for life.

You say that you are getting another leo for Cleo? Reptiles do no need or even enjoy tankmates. Often, the addition is stressful on your current Leo. Another Leo in the tank will create competition for food, for favorite resting places, etc. It may be no problem, and they will get along but I wouldn't chance it. Why add stress to your gecko, with no apparent benefit for your gecko?

One other thing to note, even if you get a female that is the exact same size as cleo, all new additions need to be quarentined for at least 1-2months before being introduced to other animals
