The Burmese Python is a subspecies (Python molurus bivittatus) with the Indian Python being the other (Python molurus molurus). There are many morphs and variations but all usually can reach 6ft in their first year. They naturally occur where I live (Python molurus bivittatus) and the normal good size adult in the field is about 4 meters (13ft). They can grow much larger than this, to 6 meters (about 20ft).

Your friend might possibly be repeating what pet stores love to tell people...."it will only get as big as the cage its in". If so, he's mistaken, and probably shouldn't own one.

Second choice, there IS a dwarf burmese python. It only gets 6-7 foot. But it also cost somewhere between $2,000-$6,000 bucks. So I doubt he is getting one of those.

Tell your friend to do some research before he buys one.
