Thor...progress long...?

artgeckko Oct 11, 2005 04:13 PM

Hello all-
I have been really thinking that since my last post that things have been taking a bad turn.
At last examination the vet suggest putting Thor down.
He said that the lack of response to all medication was very discouraging.
In agreement, I still could not bring myself to do it last Friday.
As of Saturday, the lack of movement in the front arms, seemed to determine doom.
We have been on a treatment of Baytril, Panacur, topicals for the blisters, shots, and a force feeding schedule every two days.
This has been very stressful for him as well as me and my daughter who has been my helper.
On a good note, the blisters have appeared to be healing and no further blisters are appearing.
The tremors seem to be abating.

Today his eyes, now both open, appear much clearer. He appears to have more movement in his front legs.
His reluctance to open his mouth and except his medicine / hydrating formula is a welcome sign.
He appears stronger.
SO maybe the healing has begun?
I can only hope.
Keep you updated.
Ed

Ed,

Did the vet do a culture and grow this out to determine what bacteria was involved and what drugs it may -may/not be resistant to?

Baytril is a great antibiotic that is effective against a variety of organisms but certainly not a catchall. (Hopefully the FDA will allow it to remain for small animal use and just continue with the withdrawal/ban on poultry and livestock)

The culture would help pinpoint the organism you are fighting against and what specific antibiotic might be most effective.

>>Ed,

Thank you for the support that this forum always has given me an others who have had the misfortune of sick Uros.
I hope to report better progress in the next few weeks.
I have included a shot of Thor prior to his illness.
He is 22.5" close to 1630 grams at the time of this picture.
Now he is of course 22.5 " but approx 1230 grams.
I have taken pictures of him in his current state and will post them so others can identify the disease more readily.
Thanks again,
Ed

Hi Ed,

That sounds like good news. We have to be optimistic and see it as a turning point for the better. Our thoughts are with you and Thor and we wish him a complete recovery. Please keep us updated with his progress. It has been a long and hard road for all of you, but you have tried your best to help him and it appears it may be working. Take care.

I'll pray for you and Thor that the healing has begun. I know it must have been hard to even fathom the thought of putting him down and now that he's showing signs of healing it may have saved his life. The signs he's exhibiting lately are all positive and I hope it continues. We are all with you, your family and your uros on this Ed. Keep us posted...
