CB Savannahs?? Question here............

built4spd13 Jul 20, 2003 09:37 PM

I have been noticing more and more people posting on the classifieds that they have captive bred Savannahs for sale and even in the local reptile shops there is one guy bringing in babies that he says he has captive bred and hatched at his place in So Cali. Is there any truths to this that anyone knows of. I know not to rely on what people say but they keep popping up.
I'm just curious as to the hatch rate of Savs in the USA if any.

Thanks

i live in socal and before buying my savannah i was looking everywhere and could not find c.b. savannahs!so i went with an import.

p.s. how are the finchi monitors? what are they living in? oh i used one of the pic's you gave me and made a big cage that i sleep on top of. the cage is (7' long x 3.5' wide 2.5' tall)!

oh if you get babies from the pair of finchi monitors i would love to buy one!!!

The Finschi are doing great. Please see pic posted below of the female. They're in a 4'x6'x4' for now. But they since have had to be seperated. They weren't fighting but the male was really stressing the female out and she didn't want to eat. They are now in seperate quarters and both are eating well. I'm waiting for their next poop to take a sample to the vet. If I get lucky enough to have babies most if not all of the clutch will be held back. From what I know these monitors have never reproduced in captivity. I hope to be the first. Time will tell. I'm not worried about them breeding but keeping the eggs alive freaks me out.
Thanks

I have not seen any evidence of Captive breeding and hatching of a single Sav, since Ravi did it a couple of years ago.

Don't get me wrong, someone may be doing it, but not one has posted it on this or any forum that I know of, or called me and told me they have.

Of course every pet shop in the country has C.B. savs, just ask them. While your at it, ask for proof. I know of many people who have insisted and not one has been shown any proof.

Heck they could even get one picture and make millions of copies, but they cannot get the one picture.

I know of several people that have bred them in years past. Just not lately. F

But what kind of proof other then the eggs that can be offered up? Pictures can be fakes. This guy in No. Cali says that his pair in So.CA prduced a clutch of seven eggs and four made it. I don't personally believe him but I was just curious.

In curiosity Frank have you ever bred Savannahs or thought about it? Are they too simple of a breed for you? Right now I'm at 1.2 and thinking of breeding but I'm not sure yet. My male has issues.
Thanks

I have absolutely no interest in Savs. In fact, my list gets smaller with each passing day, hahahahahahahahahaha.

To me, it takes the same about of space, time, energy to breed any species. When I started, I centered on the species that were not being imported and were not being bred. They were the rare ones in the country and in need of being produced. Many of those are common now.

The truth is, there is no reason to breed savs unless they stop importing them. There are millions around. And more coming in everyday. Why would you breed them? To add more to the already overpopulated numbers. I see no reason too.

I am also conflicted with the thought of throw away reptiles. I think they should be more expensive then the tank they go in. hahahahahahahaha, how very sad. If people pay a lot for something, they tend to give a good effort, if they pay little, well, you know. I wish I am wrong, but so far, I have not been proven wrong.

Sorry for the poor additude, and yes I do know its poor. F

I understand perfectly. Well some what. I'm not a breeder because it was never my interest. I just obtained the Savs because I like the species. Well one was a rescue but that's not important.
You do have a great point!! It would really not be worth it to me to breed them. I would just be adding to the surplus of Savs out there.
Your very right, it's sad but right. My big enclosures alone cost me $250 to build. The Sav that resides in it did not even come close to that. Such a bummer.

Thanks for your imput. I thouhgt you attitude was fine.

While Frank just mentioned that he knows no one that is currently breeding that has called him or uses this forum, you breeding them Christine, would bring true cb savs, and a bit of trust behind it!
But a surplus of savs would mean a low asking price as not too many newbies are aware of the importance of obtaining cb over wc. And, it would only be advantageous to those who visit, or have visited this forum and can be reassured of the validity of your advertising them. After all, if they don't know you, how can they be sure you are any different from the rest of those idiots?
Another question is...would it be good for the species, as Frank said, the more that are being sold for low prices, you're inevitably going to have mistreated, neglected savs

I was just think it last night. I dont have a single animal that is worth more than the money that Ive put into housing it! Strange that you said that today.

Twilight zone.

Why would Mr. Bennet want to invest so much time and money into breeding Boscs and Niles? Perhaps the payback is more than a monetary value?

I am from England and have 4 Savannahs 2 share the same vivarium and about 4/5 months ago they mated approx 5 weeks after that I got eggs 21 of them .. a lot did not look too good but I still have a few that look fine.

I have been looking on the net for information about incubation and it is very sparce. All that I can find out is that it is a very rare occurance.

Personaly one problem I think is the length of time for incubation figures of 6 months have been quoted A long time and one mistake you loose the eggs. I am sure that I have lost a few because of my makeshift incubator I have now two good ones and am hoping even if this time I dont get any savannahs next time I most definitely will
