Update on my guys

aliceinwl Oct 11, 2005 10:41 PM

I've had both my guys about a year now, Gracie a little over and Rigel a little under. Gracie is doing well, but growing very very slowly. When I caught her last August she weighed around 35 grams, at her last weigh in she was 72 grams. She's still a selective eater and dandelion flowers are definately her favorite and she's not above climbing over Rigel's head to get them.

Rigel, on the other hand, may be fixing to give Eve's boys a run for their money ;0) When I got him in early November last year, he weighed in at 14 grams. This weekend, he wasn't out in his usual spot in the afternoon, so I got worried about him. I found him tucked under a rock. Since I'd already disturbed him, I decided to weigh him. He weighed in at 140 grams! Bellow is a pic I snapped of Rigel this weekend (not his best colors since I'd just woken him up) with an inset picture of him shortly after I got him. I can't believe how fast he's growing.

10 times his size in one year, wow! Are you sure he isn't part Angel Island? What are you feeding your him?

Get a pic of him warmed up.

Rigel was still up when I got home from work, so I got some quick shots. The lighting's not the best (the sunset was very flattering). I may try to get him out this weekend for a few more shots, when the light is better.

The reason I ask is that a few years ago I had a beautiful pair from the Eagle/Coxcomg Mountain area in CA. THe male was like that but black where yours is tan. Most of the offspring produced though looked identical to your guy.

I purchased him last year from Ben Siegal as a cb redback. Ben said that he was produced by Rob Nimmo. When I emailed you about him last year, you said that Rob had purchased his breeders from you I'd be curious to know his locality myself, if you've got contact info for Rob, he'd probably be the one to tell you.

from me. And that was the bloodline he got. Supposedly they are from the Eagle/Coxcomb Mountains in CA.

Chicago one time before I had my camera and took that pic. He must have had a mild case of stomitus one year that went unnoticed when I put him in hibernation. About mid way through hibernation I noticed his lower jaw was quite swollen so I pulled him out and it was too late. It already went into the lower jaw bone so I had to euthanize him. He supposedly was caught as a young adult by a proffessor at some northwest university and then was given to a woman by the name of Julie Layton Couch. She was one of the first to people to offer cb chucks on a regular basis. That was back in the early 90's. He then went to Richard Montanucci for a couple weeks then I got him along with his mate. THey were the first pair I ever bred. I had hatched eggs previously from wildcaught females. He was a real bruiser. I think he was about 10-12 years old when he died. He had a lot more life yet. It is sad that we(I) screw up like this with these great animals.

I hope Rigel takes after him

There are some really nice chucks in that area. I haven't been in that exact area but I have seen nice males not far from there. Unfortunately, I'm only looking for a female. I would prefer a redtail but since the males are so red, I have looked for females nearby, too.

I've got another question I'd like to discuss with you. Could you email me about it?
