Brumating temperatures (i have tried to look into this...)

xitch Oct 11, 2005 11:03 PM

Hey, been a LONG time since i was last on here (hectic last months of high school, moving, starting college--all went well though).

Fluffy is my mali uro, 4 years ( ?) wild caught. He has brumated every winter, but as he is in the room adjacent to my bedroom, not in the same room i spend a lot of time in (space constrictions), I do not keep the temperature up as high (we are all poor college kids!).
What temperature do i want to maintain in the room while he is brumating?

thanks

Hi!

I've brumated my Uromastyx acanthinurus in room temperature (about 23-25c, 73-77F). I think this same would fit for your mali.
Just don't keep as long brumation period, when using room temperature than when using lower temps. (I've used like 5-8 weeks max.)

you said you go [as high as] 77, but how low is ok before i freeze him out, heh?

This made me laugh. I don't brumate my Uros so I can't really answer that question, but it reminded me of the house I rented with friends in college. We kept the thermostat between 64 and 68 and it was in the "warm" room of the house. Wearing jackets in the house became very trendy, and we had blankets within reach of every chair and sofa, lol. I think back now to how funny we must have looked, but at the time - that was $20 more a month (each) for food! lol.

Just thought I would share. Looking back, those were some very odd, yet very fun, times.

Thanks for high temp, and yes that is like our house right now! But, following our cheapness, how low can the uro's temp go (mali)?

i don't know, i don't really brumate my malis. under the breeding section of douglas dix's caresheet he says to keep the temperatures between 60-65 degrees for brumation. you can read more about it at deerfernfarms.com
if you sent doug an email with something like "lowest brumation temp" as the subject, i am sure he would reply to you

Hi!

What I remember the lowest temps were something like 15c/59F. But I'm not 100% sure if it is really the lowest, but that should be ok.
I don't have a place where temperature drops that low, so I use higher temps.
