Hatchling racks

jmartin104 Oct 12, 2005 08:18 AM

Ok, I need more hatchling racks. Here are my requirements:

* Must be able to ship (or not expensive to ship)
* Easy to clean
* Quality
* Prefer belly heat, but back is fine
* Inexpensive

I don't have time to build my own.

I just received my fourth rack from Animal Plastics. It's their hatchling rack that uses the sterilite 1752 boxes. 9 shelves, 3 boxes per shelf, for a total of 27 boxes. The boxes fit very tight. The gap between the top of each box and the shelf above it is very small. So small that even the tiniest hatchling could not escape. Yet, every box slides in and out very easy. No binding, no spilled water bowls, no issues due to a sagging shelf, etc. It's amazing that the fit is so tight and precise and yet the boxes do not bind. The rest of the rack is typical AP. Attention to detail, very rigid left to right and front to back, indirect belly heat using heat cable so there's no problem getting the higher temps required for balls, etc. I'm completely satisfied with how this rack works and just as impressed with it as my other 3 racks from AP. I highly recommend the racks from Animal Plastics.

I have heard good reviews about AP but their prices seem high.

That seems odd but I am aware of a price increase due to the increased cost of plastic or any product made from petroleum. I'm even paying more for sterilite boxes than I did just a couple of months ago.
When I made my initial purchase of 3 racks, I compared prices. I got more rack, greater capacity, lower cost per shelf, etc. You may want to double check the prices. Even if the price were the same or slightly higher, I would still recommend AP. A top priority for me was a "one time purchase". I didn't want to end up having to sell the racks a few months later and take a huge $$$ loss because I wasn't satisfied or they didn't work well. I'll be keeping my AP racks for a long time.
