Fuzzy vs Pinky

boceke Oct 12, 2005 11:50 AM

Hey all,
Another quick one from a novice. My python's about a foot and a half long now and I'm wondering if I should switch from pinky's to fuzzies (i think that's what they're called). He's got a tiny head but if aqua teen hunger force has taught me anything it's that snakes can unhinge their jaws to incredible sizes so perhaps i should swap over from the tiny ones. And btw, i'm so glad he has no hesitation when eating because doing all the research i did before buying him i was sure he wasn't gonna eat for about a year and a half after I got him.

how old is this snake? Most hatchlings can eat fuzzies for the first couple of times to get them started, then up to hoppers(even up to 2 or 3 hoppers each feeding). pinkies are really too small for most baby ball pythons.

Honestly, i'm not sure of his age, given his size i'd say a few months? And yeah it's pinky mice, the things are damned tiny, perhaps I'll feed him my last 2 today and then switch to fuzzies? Again, being a neophyte i'm not sure of all the different types / sizes. I'll go to my petstore soon and educate myself some more. General rule is size of food = size of largest part of snake then I presume.

Thanks again,
-Eli

I say don't bother with the pinkies the snake needs more bigger food now.

My hatchlings born on 8/16 most eat rat pups most are now up to eating 2 a week or more. another one that is a mouse eater is eating 3 hoppers a feeding a week. if you can't find hoppers find the smallest small mouse you can, don't be afraid to offer 2 if the snake isn't hungry it won't eat it, same goes for size generally that if it is too big they won't eat it.

First are we talking mice or rats? At a foot and a half your snake should be able to handle a rat pup or adult mouse. Match the girth of the prey item with the widest part of your snake.

If you're talking about pinky mice, that's too small of a meal. I feed my hatchlings fuzzy rats on their first meal. If you can't get those, then you can feed them hopper mice.
