Aaron:
It's easy to not be totally focused on the camera when photographing HOT snakes. Here's one thing I learned shooting with my digital camera.
If you have the option of setting the camera to Aperature priority and preset it to around "F 4" the camera will select the correct shutter speed for the exposure. Make sure the flash is also selected.
This has two effects:
1) proper lighting/exposure
2) A bit more depth of focus which compensates for your & the subjects movement.
