B&W Tegu Diet

Sarah_Spencer Oct 12, 2005 04:45 PM

I have a 1&1/2' argentinin black and white tegu that I've had since the beginning of the year...I've been feeding him hopper mice, shrimp & crickets...I've also tried cockroaches once, which he seemed to enjoy but they're not readily avaible...I've tried some kind of pre-made tegu food, which he didn't touch...he also didn't care for wet dog food & barely touch hard boiled eggs...I was wondering if anybody knew if I could feed him a few small pieces of swordfish, if so, should I cook it? & I'm welcome to any other suggestions to offer more variety in his diet...thanks

I'm not sure about the swordfish question... but have you offered your tegu some fruit? My tegu will eat fruit if it's mixed with raw turkey or with her mice. She also likes superworms.

Have you tried goliath worms or silkworms yet? I haven't, but they are pretty big worms and my friends' bearded dragons love them, so I'm going to try to get some soon.

Good luck.

You can include raw fish or shellfish in your tegus diet, but I would keep it as an occassional. Mice and various insects should be the staple, with fruits/vegetables if you can get your tegu to eat them. Kingworms/superworms are a particular favourite. If you want to try eggs again, try lightly scrambled...

Mark.
