A few questions from a new boa owner

anj109 Oct 12, 2005 06:12 PM

How is everyone? I am purchasing an 04 Suriname Boa on Friday and will be receiving him on Tuesday. I want to get his cage prepared and would like to know some of the basics for setting up his home. I think I am going to purchase a 40 gallon critter cage (glass tank) from my local pet store. Do you think this will be sufficient enough for him when he's an adult? I currently have a ball python and 2 leucistic rat snakes so I'm not new to husbandry. Could you please give me temps and humidity that I will need to keep him comfortable in? And also how many hides are recommended, water dish size, branches, etc. that will make him more happy in his home? Any other info will be appreciated as well. Thanks and I can't wait to get this little guy.

i would highly recommend you read the caresheet on boa constrictors, any good one. there is one on kingsnake if you click the link at the top to get to care sheets and i also know that riobravoreptiles.com (may have messed that up) has a nice one also. a 40gal critter cage is not even close to large enough for a full grown adult which will reach anywhere from 8-10ft. please read a care sheet BEFORE you get the snake so you know what your getting into. better yet read all the care sheets you can find on google or anywhere else.

That 40 gal might do for now, but there is no chance it will house an adult suri. I would look into buying a boaphile, they are great cages that will hold an adult.

Definately read up about them on different care sheets. If a 40 is all you have room/money for you would be better off with a male hog island boa. You will need to double or triple your size for a full grown suri unless you feed sparingly (don't recommend).

ok I wasn't aware how much space a 40 gallon tank had. I'm definitely going to go with a boaphile cage. Do you think the 421 is a high enough cage? I think it has enough floor space because it is 4ft x 2ft (please let me know if I'm wrong). But is its 11.5"'s of height high enough? $199 seems like an incredible price. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
