Housing for large Iggies

antioch Oct 12, 2005 09:01 PM

Hi everyone...

I am usually rescuing mammals, not herps, and I know almost nothing about Iguanas, other than the fact that they get larger than many pet owners are prepared for...

I am wondering whether they are ever housed in large wire cages, such as are used for the larger birds... for example, a wire cage that measures 2 foot by 3 foot base, and is four foot high?

I have had a number of these cages donated to my rescue, and am looking for places that they might be put to good use...

10 adoptable cats
2 dogs
10 of my own cats
1.2 Collared Lizards
1 hamster
1 African House Snake

Such cages will work fine as long as they're big and TALL enough, sturdy enough, and somehow you can keep humidity in the room or the enclosure at ideal levels. If you live somewhere warm, like Florida, you're on easy street, becuase they make excellent outdoor enclosures. If kept indoors, a back-wall of plywood, and a left and right side of glass (plexiglass?) will help keep the place warm and humid enough. Don't forget about the proper lighting too.

This place should help you out:

A good sized enclosure for an iguana is 7-8 feet long, 7-8 tall, and 4-5 feet deep. You can conbine cages to form a big one.

Hope this helps!

the minimum size for an adult green iguana cage is 7Fx4x4.If you want your iguana to thrive dont put him in a cage smaller than this.

Nope... I am in Ohio... and not even from Antioch, Ohio.

Antioch is the name of my cattery, where I raise and show a rare breed of cat that comes from Turkey. So Antioch refers to the ancient city of Antioch, Turkey, which has also been in Syria, depending on when in history you are looking.

youre looking for a place to donate those cages to? that rocks. 2' by 3' by 4' is a little small for a full grown iggy, but would be good for younger lizards. is there any way the cages can be cut and fit together to make a larger cage? just a thought.

Yes, it is possible to attach two cages together. That would make them 3 x 4 on the base, or 2 x 6.

The cages need reconditioning... they have some rust that needs to be coated. Is rust reformer safe to use with herps?
