Sick Frog...

lil_frogger2 Jul 20, 2003 10:46 PM

I have a christmas toad...i think thats what it is anyways. But recentely i've noticed that it's just been sitting around, and it's barely eating. It used to be jumpy and wouldn't let me pick it up, now when i go for it, it just sits in my hand. I put it on the log and it just lays with its front legs and one back leg sprawled out, just sitting there. I think it might be soemthing with the calcium, so I'm going to buy some cricket dust tomorrow. I also put a UVB light on him. Since I put the UVB light on, he seems to have a perked up a little...barely. Does anyone know what it could be? There are no vets that deal wtih frogs in my area, and if there were, the frog is so small, they probably couldn't do anything, since i got it, I've never even seen its feces. But I know it poops...does anyone have any idea of what it could be? Thanks

It is most likely a calcium deficiency, yyou should be dusting it's food at least once a week I dust my mantella's food 3 times a week cause they eat every day.

You have all those animals and you do not actively supplement their diets with calcium? Calcium supplements for reptiles and amphibians is one of the most fundamental elements of captive husbandry, what excuse could you possibly have for not owning any calcium supplements?

The animal needs to see a vet, period. Chances are it is too far gone if it has been a longtime without any supplements. However, it may benefit from an oral injection of a slurry of calcium and other vitamins and minerals.
