White areas on Jackson Cham

wraithy Jul 20, 2003 11:23 PM

Hi.

I have had this chameleon for about 2 weeks and it has developed some white areas around his sides. They are on both sides. He seems to be eating okay (from what I can see). He has a drip system going 24/7 and has both a basking lamp and a UV fluorescent light from Petsmart. It's called Super UV daylight lamp with 3%+ UVB and 7%+UVA. There are a male and a female co-habitating a 65 gal herpetarium. I have attached (i hope) the correct picture so you can see the white areas. They dont seem like skin because I tried to gently scratch at them and nothing came off.

Thanks for you help.

looks like unshed dry skin. 2 deremensis I recently obtained have this. If it doesnt come off in their next shed, i'm going to intervene. Last time it happened, I put mineral oil on it, and it was easy to remove. I think you can also use petrolium jelly or skin cream with moiturizer. It should work. Try increasing your humidity, sounds like you may have too much lighing for the jacksons, what's the temp/. like?

The big concern for me is cohabiting this cage...it is nowhere big enough for 2 of any species. I hope you were planning to separate them ASAP! One subtle sign of stress is incomplete shedding. I also think probably your humidity is too low based on what you described. Drippers don't raise humidity much at all unless you are spraying a lot several times a day. What is the air humidity range? For jax a good quality electronic humidity gauge is worth every penny.
