Need help deciding on a new BIOD

dman1101 Oct 13, 2005 06:04 PM

I am thinking about getting a dumerils but have heard they can be kinda aggresive, any truth to this? I am trying to decide between a dumerils, a brazilian rainbow and a jcp. I am going to be building a cage for it does 4'wide 5'high 2'deep sound good for an adult unless it's a dumerils then not so high and 5'wide? I have a wc red tail who is kinda aggresive and a cb ball who is sweet as can be nothin new there, i want a larger snake that is more like a ball temperment as an adult (I know most neonates can be nippy) so i can let other people handle it without worring, something around 6-8 feet. anything else i need to think about or any other snakes you suggest would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for reading this i know its kinda long
Derek

My $.02, I love my BRB's, I have 2.7 adults, 2.5 yearlings and had 136 babies this year. Of the adults all are handleable with only one I have to watch, she's not nasty, only sometimes can get stressed out with too much handling. The babies....yup....nippy, but settle down real quick. The adults are around 6 feet and between 2" and 3" diameter, depends on male - female, just ate - just pooped, gravid - just laid

I have 2 ball pythons, tame as snails. I also have several newly acquired BCI morphs, all of which seem totally handleable, just don't have much track record with them. Also, they will get bigger. Don't have dum's, but have seen some adult breeders, damn they are thick, would not want to try and pick up a full grown dum breeder.

Your signature says you have them all...!!! What a feeding day!

I love the rainbows as well! Andy

If you are looking for a "Puppy tame" large snake, a captive bred Colombian is where it's at.. I've got a 7' male that weighs 19lbs and he's got the most docile disposition that a snake can have.. Out of the 70 snakes I own, 30 or so of them being boas, I have 1 NASTY boa and after force controlling him a bit he even calms down. You can't beat the disposition of a captive bred Colombian boa as long as it's been handled since being a baby.. The Colombian boa in my opinion is the perfect "Pet" snake for beginners up to experts.

Most are docile and they're so unique. It's easy to have a one-of-a-kind looking animal. Look at a litter of Dumerils, for example, all identical. Also, once you get a few outstanding looking BCC, you're hooked!

would if I could but no, I only kept 9 (so far, will wait to see todays litter shed and then rethink my holdbacks) It was fun to put the 136 in my closing though. I've had a wonderful season, only one downer, one litter was all stills and slugs but the other 6 litters more than made up for it.
