Thin chameleon

Hello, I have a beautiful Nosey-Be male (about two years old) in a 4 x 4 x 4 screen cage, 1 pothos, 2 ficus..full of plants..75 watt heat bulb, 10.0 reptisun.... He dropped alot of weight in about two weeks. Took him to the Vet...parasites...he was given a dose of fenbendasol (panacur) and another subsequent dose and is parasite free...however...he drinks, and shows no signs of dehydration (poop is brown with white urates..(very little orange in between) ..but still thin and will not eat. I have been forcefeeding him, i open his mouth and then he readily eats and chews what I put in...but will not eat or catch food for himself.......any suggestions??? I am feeding him his favorites...silkies....superworms...crickets...wax worms for weight...nothing tempts him...is this normal????

Hey,

Sounds like a great setup, except for the reptisun 10.0. Switch it to a 5.0. I believe a 10.0 is for a desert enviorment.

As for him not eating, it can be a number of things. You should definetly have him checked for parasites again. In the type of enviorment you described, parasites also flourish. Just cause he was given the medicine, the enclosure often still has parasites and they catch them again. He could have damaged his tongue as well. The vet might be able to find out. Try giving him some goliath worms. Those things really catch a chameleons eye. They love 'em. Let us know what happens...

Thank you for replying...this is the reptisun 10.0 that is for chams...not the desert.....it is for the bigger cages...he was checked for parasites and is free and clear (two days ago...his cage was sterilized...new plants....etc...however,....wehre do I get goliath worms??????

How long ago was the last dose of Panacur? If it was just a few days, maybe he is feeling some side effects from the toxin and has no appetite. It could be a combination of subtle things, like being bored with normal foods, he's lost his taste for his usual foods, some stress from the treatments. Chams often get really stimulated by watching and hunting flying insects. You could try houseflies or night moths. Also smaller garden spiders are a favorite. Change the way you offer food. Try using a large plastic bin so the food moves around more and gets his attention.

Hey,

You can get the goliath horn worms from mulberry farms.
