How many of you have hideboxes for your Bd's?

PoohBear03031 Oct 13, 2005 09:40 PM

When I was researching before I got Tequila, I got the idea that hides were not good for dragons, because they would spend all their time in them. Is this true, or is it only true for juvies? Just wondering if anyone have hides, and if I should have one too? Thanks in advance for any help.

Some people say they are good some say they arent. I dont use them myself.

One hypothesis with hide boxes is that when beardies feel threatened they will run and hide in them. this includes when you put your hands in the tank for feeding or handleing. They grow acutomed to this and become more skittish. When infact you want them to stay out in the open and get used to being held. I have not tried this myself but it does make a little sense. If you want to provide an area for your beardie to feel secure, try plastic or silk plants. They are still out in the open but at the same time feel secure in them.

just a couple thoughts on this, but im sure there are quitea few people out there that use hide boxes with no problems.

peace,
nate

hide boxes are fine for bearded dragons. It gives them a nice cool location to go if the tank happens to be warmer than they like. Also, many will sleep inside overnight, though I found with my dragon (when I had her) she slept whereever she was when the light went out.

Dragons who spend alot or all their times in their hide are either brumating or not well. Or the tank is way to hot. Other reasons dragons may spend most of their time in their hides is if there are other dragons housed with them and they are intimidated/bullied by the other dragons.

Mine falls aslep also where he is when the light goes off. I have a hideout, but he never went into it. He hops on top of it sometimes, but never goes inside. I have it on the cooler side of the cage. BEfore I got it , I noticed him digging himself under paper towels to go to sleep, so I thought that he'll like it to sleep in. O boy, I was wrong.

i have a few hides in mine but he has never gone in it. like icemom said, he will jump on it but i have never seen him go in any. i dont necessarily think it is right to deprive them of a place to retreat so they will "get used to being handled". i would say give him one or two and if he/she uses it or not is up to him. i think that giving them a place to hide when they feel stressed will make them happier overall.

Tequila sleeps under her shelf liner sometimes, the exact same shelf liner that you use. Love the little palm trees.

Tequila also sleeps that way, but she also likes to sleep under her shelf liner.

Nowdays he mostly sleeps on the branches or sometimes hanging down from screen wall. I have a screened enclosure rather than a glass tank. He's 8 month old but I don't know about the morph. I didn't ask the breeder when I bought him, and can't get in touch with him . He really enjoys to be held, always colors up and gets exited. What morph is Tequila? Can you post some pics? I know one can't figure out the morph without knowing the blood lines, but I love pics of different dragons. They are so cute... I have only one hideout, it's half log, if I'm to sell it I would advertise it as barely used, LOL. His cage is on the pateo and house lights don't bother him at night, that's why I think he's not hiding anymore, because at first I had a tank in the house and he was just trying to get some sleep and buried himself under paper towels. BTW, he goes to sleep at 7 PM, what a life! And he appears to be really sleepy starting about 6:30 and waitng for the lights to go off already! LOL

hi. I am working on getting some pics on a disk, so that I can post them. I just have a regular film camera, so that is the only way I know how to post them. Tequila is a SandfireX blood aborigione red morph. I got her from a breeder at the reptile expo that comes around here. I think the aborigione red part is just a name he made up though. So basically she is a sandfire X blood. Your little one sounds like a real cutie.
