naturalistic viv?

Paul2 Jul 21, 2003 12:22 AM

I've got a large glass tank; it's about 3 feet long by 16 inches wide by 20 some inches tall. I was wondering about setting up a naturalistic display in it? It would either be used to house the male gopher I'm getting or the cal king, but I figure the basics would be the same, since thier habitat overlaps.
So, how should I do this? I almost always do quasi-natural tanks, but I've never done one with the plants and everything. Any advice? I was thinking some aloe and chicken & hen cactus or something. I wasn't sure about the soil mix I'd need though, or even if those plants would be good.

Thanks!
Paul

As much as I like the look of a naturalistic vivarium it's not very practical for large snakes. A snake like a gopher or cal king will produce a lot of feces. With living plants, it would be really difficult to change the substrate as often as necessary. Large colubrids might also damage the plants while crawling over them. If you're determined to do this, I would keep the plants in buried pots so you can remove them to completely change out the substrate for thorough cleanings.
