Trap door question for Chris Harper......

BobS Oct 13, 2005 10:20 PM

Chris,

I've talked to you a few times about thinking of stacking three levels or so of commercially available cages to provide different temp/ humididty gradients.

My question for you is, can you think of a simple but proffessional looking way I could use to create the ability to have a hatch of sorts between cages but that would allow me the flexibility of using the cage normally without ruining it for regular use?

Something prehaps that could be slid closed and locked but then when needed to connect to another cage could be opened and locked securely without ruining the cage.

After reading the last few threads about better husbandry, I think many of us would consider doing something like this if we could do it without ruining an expensive cage.

Thanks. Bob.

Bob,

What I always used was a piece of PVC pipe glued in place. Then I just used a PVC endcap to cover the opening when necessary.

In my case I was always gluing the PVC pipe into 3/4" thick plywood so I had plenty of surface area for gluing. With a thinner plastic cage this might not be so easy.

One thing that comes to mind are these PVC flanges that I occasionally see. They could be riveted and glued to any plastic cage. You might need to drill out the base as I believe they are also an end cap of sorts.

I believe there are also flanges with threads. Might be worth a trip to a local plumbers supply store and see what's available.

If your local Plumbing store doesn't carry them you might check a High end Fish store. We used a type of Bulkhead Pipe connection at a fish store back home for water connections to tanks. They come in all sorts of sizes but I don't know wear we got them. Just another idea.

another similar option to the PVC Pipe would be ABS pipe. That is if you want black instead of white.
