Please ID these chameleons

ohannah Oct 14, 2005 08:09 AM

Hi

Can anyone please id these chameleons? They were sold to a friend of mine in Egypt, but we are not sure which specie they are.

Any help will be appreciated.

Wow, I should know, but they may be showing odd coloration because of extreme stress. They are thin, a bit bloated in abdomen (maybe parasites), and dehydrated too. The striping almost looks like melleri, but the head, casque and lack of earflaps doesn't agree with that. Did the seller say what they were or where they are from? I'll have to look at my books. Chris, do you know?

>>Chris, do you know?

Yeah, they look like Chamaeleo (Chamaeleo) africanus to me which would make sense as they are a native species to Egypt. I'm not 100% sure so I'll email the pics to Petr for confirmation.

Please advise you friend that placing them in the sink like that is not a good idea for rehydration. Ask your friend to place a large houseplant of some type in the shower and allow as gentle of a spray as possible to pray about half of the tree and put one chameleon at a time on the tree for about a half hour to an hour a day until they are rehydrated. This should be in addition to misting in their enclosure, etc. If you aren't able to get the shower spray fine enough, try bouncing the spray off the wall of the shower.

Well, I have a pair at the moment and I think my female may be gravid (time will tell I guess). I'm keeping my fingers crossed she is as they definately are not easy to come by anymore and I just love this species. I've been looking for more so if anyone has a suggestion on who might have some, I'd be very interested. I'll post some pics soon.

Chris,

I am working on another shipment from Uganda which will include Hoe's. I will let you know more as it progresses.

Also I agree, the Chams pictured are C.Africanus that are in very sad shape.

Yes, that would fit much better. The striping pattern sort of threw me, but the head is right. I was also expecting to see more of a black stress spotting overlay.

Well, I'm glad I emailed Petr as he's overturned my ID He said that his best guess in their conditions is that they are Chamaeleo (Chamaeleo) laevigatus. A beter photo and one of them when (if) they recover from their current condition would help and would be much appreciated by both Petr and I!

Please let us know if there is any questions we can help answer in order to best help their keeper bring them back to health!
