School looking for Class Pet

Judge1162 Oct 14, 2005 11:28 AM

Hello and thanks in advance for reading this post.

I am posting for my wife a school teacher; her class is allowed a class pet usually it is a hamster or fish. However as Herp loves and Bearded Dragon owners we wanted to expose her 1st grade class to a different type of pet. We had planned to adopt a Bearded Dragon from a local rescue group, but it took over a month to get approval from the school district to have an "alternative" classroom pet. By that time the group of Bearded Dragons up for adoption was gone. The school is in Northern NJ and now we are looking for another Bearded Dragon to rescue. If anyone knows of any groups or individuals with a Bearded Dragon up for adoption please let us know. We are not looking for anything fancy a normal phase or “Stubby(missing tails or limbs) Bearded Dragon” are more than fine, we are also open to any age, babies would be great but an adult is fine too. We are willing to pick up or meet up with someone in NJ, NY, PA, CT even if you are not in these area please contact us and we will see what we can workout

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer

I have some perfect young juvenile dragons that would be great for a school project. These are the ones that were not selected from our last herp show - and they are feeling unloved.

Drop us an email to reptayls@yahoo.com and I am sure we can find something to suit your needs.

Hey guys, I'm an elementary principal who has been taking her dragon back and forth to school. The kids adore Zilla but I can't bear to leave him there. They are so fascinated with him (as am I ). I would love to have a dragon at school but I coudln't really afford to buy one at the prices they charge around here. (Western NY...south of Buffalo). I would love to get one for school...and yes, long tails are optional. (My Zilla came to me with a bitten off tail).

I would be willing to pay some, just can't pay $150.

Anybody around here?

I think having a Beardie as a class pet is great. My kids loved Draco so much. It was hard for me to leave him overnight. He did however, come home on weekends and holidays. Well over summer break he grew on my husband and daughter. Now Draco is retired but does make class visits for a day. Last year he was included in our class picture. I sat him on my shoulder during story time so he could read the book with us. He walked around on my shoulder as I conferenced with the students about their journal writing. They loved to write about him. Then when it was time for their nap (kindergarten) he role modeled for them. They loved to watch him chase crickets. During recess he went out with us in his harness for some sunshine. It has been my experience they make great classroom pets. Goof luck in your Beardie search. There are some great people with big hearts at this forum.

Hi Maleea,

If you can afford the shipping, I have a nice male that would love a school class. He even has a long tail! He came to us as a rescue (not free) a couple of years back, and made a full recovery. He has visited lots of kids around here - is very laid back - but no one wants to buy the normal color anymore!

Give us a shout....

THANK YOU, to all the wonderful breeders that have offered to adopt us a Bearded Dragon, you have made the Kids very happy and I am sure already you have helped make some future Herp owners, as we already have a heated battle over who gets to take the Dragon home over what break ad who get to keep him for the summer and we haven't even got a Dragon yet.

You all have been very generous. Your generousity will not be forgotten, I will highly recomend you guys to anyone looking to buy a dragon, not only are you wonderful breeders that produce some great looking dragons, you are wonderful people, who not only care about their animals, but about the hobby and about helping spread the love of reptiles with a bunch of school children.

Thank you all so much.

I'm glad I could help you, and your wife with a pet dragon for her first grade class.

I believe I brought my first breeding pair of Ribbon Snakes, and all 45 of their tiny offspring to show and tell in the 2nd grade Reptiles have always been an interest of mine from as young as I can remember. Newts, frogs/toads, snakes, turtles you name it I had it as a young boy. That sentence alone makes me look back and appreciate the parents I was lucky enough to have growing up If this experience sparks just 1 boy or girls interest in reptiles then I'd be extremely excited, and satisfied with my donation to the schools, and clubs I have donated too.

If you, your wife, or her class have any questions what so ever please feel free to email us. My girlfriend, and I have been in touch with 2 or 3 schools we have donated pets to in the last two years, and it is always nice getting emails from the children, and answering some of their great questions. If you'd like maybe I could put you in touch with the other schools we have donated too, and maybe have the children learn, and ask questions of each other.. You could also get ideas on how they handle their weekends, and holiday vacations.

THANK YOU SO MUCH

I bought her in to school on Friday, and the kids were so excited, they named her Lizzy. They had some interesting questions, including will her foot grow back, does she change colors, and my favorite does she or will she breathe fire. Our response was we will have to wait and see and observer her to see if her foot will grow back or if she can change colors we did tell them that she does not breath fire. They all took turn holding her and touching her. She is wonderful, she love to be handled, she does not get up-set, and she hasn’t even “puffed” once with all the handling and touching. My wife has fallen in love with her. In response to your concerns along with my own, Lizzy will be coming home over the weekend and holidays to my house where we have set up a tank for her.
