Pics of my new Southern!

rjo Oct 14, 2005 01:10 PM

I wanted to thank everyone on this forum for all the great advice I've been able to read. I seem to have been successful in getting rid of the mites my lizard had after I got it and I put some pics up on flickr.

Looking at these pics, can anyone tell me for sure if its a male or female, and about how old it might be? I put a quarter in one of the pics for comparison.

Thanks again!

Nice shots! Your al looks like a female and is at least two years old. Down in southern CA where you are, you have the San Diego subspecies which I don't have a lot of experience with. They are supposed to get larger than the Californias that occur where I live. I'm not sure if they grow at the same rate as the Californias, if she were a California, I'd say she's at least 3. Mature males have much broader heads than females, you can start to see the broader head when they reach about two years of age and it gets more noticable as the male gets older. By their third year, it's usually pretty obvious. I've attached a picture of a pair for reference.
