How well does beardies sell?

chameleoncrow Jul 21, 2003 01:49 AM

Hi everyone,

My post might sound insensitive to beardie lovers, but i was just wondering about the market size of bearded dragons. Is there anyone out there who has sold their babies before? I would like to hear of your experiences. Are they easily sellable, or are they pretty hard to sell, seing as there are so many sellers out there. Is it easy selling them to wholesalers? Is it at least the slightest profitable? I wouldn't want my beardies to turn out like the Iguana problems. I won't buy beardies with intent just to make money out of them, I would acquire one because i love reptiles. Just wanted to know how well they sell. Any thoughts?

Well, I live in Sweden - so maybe you don't have use for my experience, but...

I didn't make any profit at all selling 18 babies last year. The babies ate so much! (I breed crickets myself, but I couldn't keep up with their appetite, so I had to buy crickets). A serious breeder shouldn't sell before they are around 8 weeks old, so you have to buy a looooot of crickets. I think I actually lost some money breeding. So if you want to get rich - do something else!

It was quite hard to sell the babies. Many people replied to my ads, but it took me 2 months to sell them all.

If I breed again - I won't keep as many as 18 babies.

I don't breed, but I have been told that it is difficult to sell your babies. Especially if you are not a big name breeder. If you don't have lots of fancy colors, and nobody knows who you are, well... it could be bad until people get to know you. The problem is that people are more likely to buy from the bigger names first.
