Sperm Retention?

LdyPayne Oct 14, 2005 10:19 PM

I haven't really found anything about this in corn snakes, so thought I would ask it here. Do corn snakes retain sperm? I am asking as one of the two corns I received this summer who didn't want them anymore (I beleive she is close to two years now) had a clutch of eggs late this past season. (previous owner kept them together, having assumed both snakes were female but one of the breeders made an error).

What I want to know is should I expect that same female (without being cooled or placed with the male this coming breeding season) will lay a fertile clutch come spring? Right now I don't have an incubator but can get one in time, but as I don't plan to breed my corns this coming season, I won't bother if there isn't any need.

I don't know about retaining for a year... But I have heard of it (not sure if it was true or not) But corns DO retain sperm. They often "double clutch" meaning lay 2 clutches of eggs in one season usually without the need to be placed with a mate again.
