new cages - what do you think?

dniles Oct 14, 2005 10:48 PM

I just got these from Jungle Habitats Plastics. They are 4 ft long x 2 ft deep by 1 ft tall and are made of PVC. I have the option to put dividers in them and make two cages out of one. Alan Hall, the guy that owns Jungle Habitats, was awesome to work with. He built my cages in a very short time frame and was very helpful and easy to get ahold of during the process. Let me know what you think.

Great looking cages, but unless you are housin a completely terrestrial lizard you will need heat shrouds to cover the exposed heat lights.

I found upto 25 watts to be fine not even hot to the touch and add heat in plastic cages but granted most use 40 watt bulbs which are to hot to the touch.

I am using 15 watt bulbs controled with a dimmer switch. I've done this for years and never had a problem.

Is there something I should be concerned about?

Malays Oct 16, 2005 09:44 AM

I use 25 watts funny thing is the regular 25 watts were hot to the touch. I use cheap GE colored party bulbs red for night uncoated reg type for day and not hot to the touch just warm and heat nicely.
I certainly agree with others that most bulbs run way way to hot and need bulb guards. If I was using 40 watts or more I would use them.

Oh..I'm sorry. I thouth that the cages would have good ventilation and require a normal wattage of bulb for it's size. But I can see how a 15 watt light could heat an enclosd box like that.

Look very nice .Why do you prefer to raise them off the floor?

dniles Oct 15, 2005 07:12 PM

I raised them off the floor since in my experience, the cages on the floor are harder to get down to clean and the animals on the floor always seemed to lack the attention that one ones higher up more in my line of sight got.

Granted, they're only raised off the floor a little over a foot, but it makes a difference, particularly when it comes to cleaning.
