yellowtails...

bloodycoils72 Oct 14, 2005 11:19 PM

Hey people longtime since last post; anyhow I'm thinking of purchasing a 3rd generation c.b.b. male from a dealer.First since I've only kept uni's and blacktails, I'm wondering if yellowtails would be more tedious due to their attitudes. I know some of you say you own "docile" individuals, still is it wise to deal with them since I have no priors dealing with yellowtails? The breeder told me to just handle the little ones quite often...what do the experts say?
Thanx, Hassan

They are pretty much the same in every way to the Unis and B.T.'s except that I find that they are a bit more "flighty" or should I say that they move more when handled.
Other than that, they eat and crap just as much as the other subs.
The w.c. temperment that make a lot of people shy away from w.c. YT's does not represent all YT's. Just about every single w.c. YT I ever had before and have now is extrmemely tractable. I sent epidemic a w.c. male recent import that is a peach to deal with! It ate the first day it got here and never tried to bite me. I have a big male now that is very aggressive and even him I can hold once out of the cage although I don't do that very often! LOL
Getting a c.b.b YT is definitely a great way to go as long as it is eating on a regular basis, preferably rodents! You'll have that snake accustomed to being handled in no time and just think of the beautiful monster you'll have in a couple of years! Is it a baby YT from Terry W.???
Good Luck!

Thanx for the input,I found this place in Columbus,Ohio. He has a few left over from when he posted last.I'm looking into a male, which he told me is pretty highstung at the present, but says should calm down a bit more with lots of interaction. What do you think?

Yeah that's the same guy. I saw pics of the parents and one of the offspring. They are all flighty when babies and you have to figure that they aren't getting much of if any interaction so it is to be expected that they are skittish.
Don't worry, they are virtually the same as the other subs.
Handle him regularly and he'll be fine for you.
Did you ask what the are eating?
They were saying that those babies were feeding almost right out of the egg on rodents which I find extremely hard to believe! I couldn't get my hatchlings to feed that soon nor do I know of anyone else that had that kind of good fortune.
Make sure to get a recent picture of the snake you are getting and look to see if it has some girth to it.
Make sure to post lots of pics if you get him!

Good luck

yup, I bought one of those hatchling YT males from the folks in Columbus, and he's been taking f/t pinks out of the egg. Is crazy flighty still but feeding well for me.

How do you know that those snakes were feeding right out of the egg? Did you see it for yourself?
Just very interested to know if that's true?
If so, that is very cool. How's the coloration on your snake as far as the amount of yellow?
Good luck with your YT. They rule!

A neonate YT feeding? I have to say, that sounds like quite a feat and I too would like to know what the secret is, as I have found baby YT's to be the most difficult of the Dry genus to get started, with Uni's and BT's being tied at a somewhat distant second, rubidus and couperi tied at third and erebennus being the easiest I have had the privilege of starting.
As Bobby has already mentioned, there are a few of us who will be producing YT’s this year and there will probably be a lucky few who hit the jackpot with WC gravid females, as they are generally imported into the U.S. during the mating season, though such specimens usually must pass through, or under, the "Wall"

Best regards,

Jeff

yes, you're right, I'm taking the breeder's word on that. I got him at about 6 weeks old, and he didn't need any coaxing to take f/t. He looks typical for neonate YT, traces of yellow and lots of banding. Have otherr Drys but have never kept these guys. Am a little uncertain whether frequent handling is good for him at this age, even if that's a good way to calm them down as they mature. He's just such a frantic little guy right now.

minicopilot Oct 17, 2005 01:43 PM

I wouldn't handle him too much at this point. They are so fragile and skittish at that age and size that you may disrupt his feeding pattern although he sounds like he's doing alright for you! short daily handling sessions should be ok. He probably thinks you are a predator!
All is quite on the YT import front Jeff!!!
I will be keeping a sharp eye out for any good YT's coming in and I'll let you know. I still don't know if Sunshine hooked up or not. I looked at her last night and she is going into the blue. Satan has not had an appetite for a couple of weeks now. He must be too horny to feed! LOL
