Female hoggie undersized?

Purplemonkey Oct 15, 2005 12:21 AM

What is the average size that a female should be at about 1 1/2 years of age?

I've had a female western hoggie for about a year, and she went off feed for several months, and finally started to eat again. She seems small for being a female and at least a year old. She's only about 10 inches long. It just seems like she should be bigger. I'm keeping her from brumation this year, so I can continue to feed her and try to fatten her up a bit. She isn't meant for breeding, so I'm not worried about eggs or anything.

Any suggestions?

I think its perfect size. Are you feeding her pinkys still? You made a wise choice from keeping her from hibernating, let her eat more, by the way how much are you feeding her a week?

Well...before she went off feed for almost 8 months, she was getting 2-3 pinkies a week. I got her to take a pinkie dipped in tuna fish water the other day...so I'm going to try to move her up to two a week again. Thanks for the comment, though. It makes me feel a bit better. I've just always read/heard that female hoggies get bigger than males. And she is..well..tiny.

As far as size goes, she is pretty undersized compared to where she could be. Just feed her 2 times a week and as long as she continues to feed she will grow. It's a good idea to keep her on heat all winter and feed feed feed. Once she starts feeding consistently again you'll be surprised how fast that little bugger will grow.

Just curious, What are the temp in the cage? (hot end, cool end).
My westerns went off feed also, and I found that they really just needed more heat. I have crushed gravel on the side of the tank that is above the under tank heater and that stays really warm. I would say the surface of that side is about 95 or so. They use that side often and ever since I made that change they feed anytime I offer. The cool side of the tank has fine pine shavings and is about 75-80.
Good luck, I know it gets frustrating when they go off feed.
Nick
Also thanks for the help guys with my eastern, after I moved him to his own cage he has not regurged.
