Feeding problems of Nerodia fasciata fasciata

Toomas Oct 15, 2005 04:18 AM

My female 3 years old specimen got first time offsprings in August 31, 2005. Juveniles were 11 (3 were dead).

8 babies dont eat yet, I forcefeed them. Is it normal when they dont eat some months and keeper should forcefeed them? I feed them with meat of fiches.

Make sure the temps are correct, with a warm basking area. Make sure the enclosure is dry, with clean water in a shallow bowl. Make sure the baby snakes have some shelter to hide in or under. They should greedily take small minnows.

Do you have a thermometer in the enclosure? What are you trying to feed them?

The temperature is 30C on the heating spot. I spry inside of cage every day. I try to feed with fish (I cut small pieces).

I wouldn't spray the cage. Dampness will quickly cause scale rot and eventually kill your snake. Nerodia need to be kept dry. A water bowl big enough to soak in is good, but the rest of the enclosure should be bone dry. A warm spot from an over head lamp is good. As with any herp, creating a heat gradient is important so the animal can find the temperature it prefers. An under tank heat pad can help withthis too.

Its not hard to get most Nerodia switched to mice. Just choose smallish mice and rub them well with a fish. Feeding pieces of fish will result in malnutrition.
