Do Firebelly toads eat Firebelly toads?

r2d2 Jul 21, 2003 03:43 AM

I got 2 firebellies 4 weeks ago and put them in a hexagone tank 15"dia x 25"high. The slightly smaller one was a male, for sure, since he would occasionly hop on the other ones back.
I feed them an average of two dozen crickets a week (one dozen each). The last time I fed them they shared one dozen one day, then another dozen the next day... but the following day my MALE firebelly was gone. So now all I have left is a firebelly killer. My questions are:
Is it common for firebelly toads to eat one another?
Is there a certain situation that may trigger this behaviour?
Is it safe to get an other companion for my toad? Or will it probably end up being another victim?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Richard

they can,but it would have to be small to get eaten.Firebellies are pretty good escape artist, maybe it just got out.happened to me when I first got mine and it was my male too,he was just small enough to fit through a small hole in the lid.

Yes, Fbt's probably would eat smaller firebellied toads, but the fbt's would have to be ALOT smaller. Fbt's are excellent escape artists, and sadly many fbt owners have, lost a fbt, or two. Not just because of carelessness, but because they thought(including me )that that tiny little hole in the screen would be alright,...for the night. Or someone may have accidentally left a lid off a fbt's tank.Ok, it is carelessness , but noone means to hurt there fbt's in any way.

Hope u find your little one,
Steven

PS: A DOZEN EACH thats a lot of crickets each!

Dear Richard,

Yes, It is possible (sad but true)
But being that you were feeding them a dozen crickets ea. a week
your frogs shouldn't have been starving.(not enough to eat the other one.)
Also, when in feeding mode the toads will grab hold of anything that moves, including one another. This is usually harmless, and the second frog pulls free without injury. However, it is always best to keep an eye on the toads at feeding time to prevent these problems.
Might I suggest getting another firebelly toad? about the same size as the one you still have. So yours won't be lonely!
And observe the reactions and actions of the two together for the first time.
