Building a beardie cage, have a few questions...

jheff20 Jul 21, 2003 03:53 AM

I have been wanting to own a beardie for quite some time now and thought the best course of action would be to build a cage. I have read that a 36"x20"x20" is suitable for 1 adult. I have also read that the top needs to be screened. My plans include a solid top with the basking light built into one end and the sides of the cage are mostly screened. Is this going to work as well?? The coller side will have a heating pad underneath attached to a rheo-stat. Plus, the front doors, I have thought about making them slide and what not, but have decided that the access door will be split horizontally creating a platform at the bottom while the top flips all the way up. The cage is also gonna sit on 4 4ft legs to bring the total hieght to 6ft. Does any one think I could build this thing for about $100??? Give or take a little?? Thanks!!!!

Well recently I had been looking into pricing the cost of building a beardie cage also. However mine was designed for 2 adults, a breeding pair. So my dimensions were a lot bigger than yours. I managed to price the supplies for around $180 give or take. Your dimensions are a tad smaller than mine (4' x 2'x 2').
I would estimate your cost around $130 at most depending greatly on the material used for the glass. I ended up buying some storm windows which were almost perfect in size to my needs for around 13 bucks all it is is plexi glass and you can cut it easily with a circular saw.

However I got very luck and I found a old showcase laying by the street which ended up being perfect. Maybe you can find something like this which will cut the cost greatly. I had to revamp and remodel the showcase but its absolutely perfect for my needs and looks great.

Anyways, Goodluck
