Help finding a snake

b23ball23 Oct 15, 2005 09:57 AM

i've been doing a lot of herping, even though the temperature is getting colder....any ideas on how to find some snakes (I live in MD)

the past 2 times i've caught a garter and ringneck. I was hoping to find a different type of snake next time.

The question is how do you attract the snakes......I was thinking i could gather some good logs and put them in one location.

ANy one know any special tricks to catching snakes in wooded/ partially rocky terrain where its around 60-70 degress (MD)

ANY help would be great

i'm really hoping to find a rat snake or other colubrid by the end of this year

Placement of artificial cover (plywood, tin) and in your case, logs (natural, but strategically placed by humans) may take a few years to get "seasoned," i.e. snakes both familiarize themselves with its location and find it suitable.

If you can find an illegal dump site in your area with large, flat objects already dispersed on the ground, now and springtime would be good times to check it out.

now the trick is finding out where to lay the stuff

now, hers the scenario:

heavily wooded slopes down to a low-lying stream. There are some heavily rocky spots, and some with no rock. I dont know whether to narrow my search closer to water, higher on the slope, or try some less dense cover.

I'm in search of something other than gater and ringnecks

thanks for that link, I'll make sure I read it over and over to let it sink in

you got milks and timbers and hognoses to the west...kings to the east...and coppers and blk. rats pretty much all over the state....the key is putting in time in what good habitat is still left.check out f*i*e*l*d*h*e*r*p*e*r*s dot com.(sans asterisks).
