Went to the Zoo

PHRatz Oct 15, 2005 10:37 AM

In Abilene TX the day before yesterday. They have several sulcata because they've taken them in from people in the past. They aren't taking in sulcatas now but it was so neat to see a variety of sizes.
I think the largest one probably weighed about 100lbs.

I sit there looking at big ones thinking Oh maaaaaaaaaan what are we going to do when ours is that big & she decides she's not going to go into her heated mansion in the fall. Fall is the worst season because the temps fluctuate so much between night & day. She's out all day feeling wonderful but when night time temps fall for the first time in a season.. she never knows it's coming so she won't go to the heated mansion on her own.
At 100lbs.. I think we need some sort of cart to roll her on. I wonder where I could get one that she'd walk onto on her own? LOL

You could get alittle hand cart (the 2 wheeled things) and put rubber matting around the bottom part so you don't scratch up her shell

Yesterday I looked at one of those things that mechanics use to roll themselves under cars. The wheels on that thing were way to lightweight, it'd never work. lol

I think a hand cart would be the best thing. They have big wheels, i've used them to move lots of large objects when I worked at the petstore (oh did i tell you I quit Like these: http://www.handtrucksrus.com/NewHarperHandTrucks.aspx

Hey there, you might want to try to lure her into her home by having her follow you into the enclosure tempting her with some of her favorite foods or maybe a bringht flower. if it's cold enought she should be glad to get into the heat as soon as she realizes its there!

LOL that's just what we did but holy cow let me tell you, at 55lbs it was a hassle, I can only imagine what it'll be like when she's 100lbs. EEEK!!
Like I said in another post now that it's too cool every night she's not having any problems going home on her own.. it's just that transitional weather during Sept. & early Oct. that was a big problem for us. I'm glad to see those few weeks gone!

Mel you didn't tell me you quit.. but I don't blame you.

Yeah one of those hand trucks might work but did I ever tell you that a hand truck like that is what caused my foot problems? Trying to lift up something heavy by using my foot to pull the hand truck back so it would roll is how I tore a ligament in my foot in the first place. It was 20 years later that I ended up on crutches because of it, inserts in my shoes keep me walking today but scooping Destiny up on one of those might have to be a thing her Dad has to do lol.

Last night it got really cold I think it was supposed to have been 38 degrees but I think it never actually got that low.
DH was teaching until 10 last night so I called him around 10:15 as he was on the way home & told him that Hobo has buried himself & he's blocked the doorway of the Mexican ground squirrel burrow he's moved into. I said when you get here, why don't you move the best turtle house over the burrow to add more cover for him. He did that then when he came in the house I said maybe we should put the big door over Destiny's flappy door in case it gets windy in the middle of the night.
Ok so he goes out to do that but comes back in saying there's poop ALL over the place in there!
He acted like it's the end of the world! I knew it was fresh because I'd looked in on her at sunset, there was no poop then.
He won't mind yeah, right..lol
I got up, put on sweats, shoes & socks then said Hey it's no big deal, this is life.. chill out.
I got my heavy yellow kitchen gloves, a bag, a spray bottle of chlorhexidine & a rag.. took me all of about 5 minutes to get her cleaned up. sheesh
I guess he won't mind if he'll just chill out! ROFL!
