Saddleback vrs Aldabra

LilBitCrazy Oct 15, 2005 12:19 PM

Hi all, its been a few years since i have posted on this forum.
about 3 yrs ago i lost my galapagos saddleback to a pancreatic disorder. He was the best tort i have ever had the pleasure of bieng friends with. i am now thinking of getting a hatchling and i was wondering if anyone knows any good reliable breeders here in the states. Also i was wondering if his good nature and sweetness
was indicative of the type of tort he was.. another words are all galops sweet and crave attention or was he an acception? i was also thiking about the aldabra instead of a galop but i have no idea what thier temperment is like. Are the galops and the aldabras approx the same ? is the care approx the same? i had my galop for 22 yrs so he was quite large. i can only imagine what a cranky or aggressive tort of that size can do as far as destruction of property or people for the matter.
thanks for the info.
Rick

All I have are galapagos torts so I am a little biased, but I would hold out until you can find a galapagos. The price is not that much different. All of my torts will follow me through the yard, and when it is cold out they are smart enough to go into their heated enclosure by themselves. I have friends with aldabras and their torts are very shy and every night in the winter they have to be put on a dolly and pushed into their house. From what I hear this is pretty common with aldabras though I am sure there are exceptions. As far as breeders I can't help you Galapagos seem to be alot harder to come by recently. I used to see them for sale at the orlando expo every year but recently there have been none.

Thank you very much !
It has taken me over 6 monhs of thinking about this to finally
make a decision to actually get another large tort, so i can wait, specially if aldaras are shy and...uhmmm not too bright.
My Galop was super smart and just begged for attention ... and thats what i am hoping to achieve agian. I have 2 Sulcatta's
1 around 80 ish pounds and the other around 110 ish ... and while they follow me around , its more for the food then for attention.
they are very sweet and very nice torts , but they could care less whether i scratch thier neck ... the are just hopeing i will give em a bananna or some other treat. Every morning i drink my coffeee with my torts, my galop would come over and lay her head on my lap and be content just to be with me.
thanks again for the insight
