Another Cham Having Seizures - Help

scales53 Oct 15, 2005 11:14 PM

This one is a 6 to 8 month old Veil. I got on here to ask about this and saw the post about the Jackson. He is getting progressively worse. Have not been able to find any help for this. Anybody got any ideas? A second one getting exactly the same care is great (not in the same tank or even in sight).

Hey,

I wish I could help more, but I am really stumped. When I was first reading the post about the other seizure chameleon, I was thinking that it was a cham excited, and was bobing his head and moving wierd, ect, from seeing a silkworm or something that excited him. But after reading deeper into it, I realized that it was something very different. I honestly would not know what it would be without actually seeing it, and even then I might not be sure. The only thing I wanted to comment on was the last part of your post, when you mentioned that you keep him in a tank. It is definetly a good idea to move him into some sort of screened cage. Although I doubt that this will stop his seizures, it might help prevent other illnesses in the future.

He was in a screen enclosure when he started this. Had been in there about 2 weeks. I put him back in a tank to provide more intense UV without him having to climb. Don't need any broken legs at this point. He is still eating well.

Could you please describe what you are seeing? I'm not sure what other post you are referring to. Chams have several odd movement behaviors that we can use to rule out health problems but some of them are species specific. The things that come to mind are vitamin or mineral deficiencies, but we can't possibly help unless we know more about your specific husbandry. Details are important! Brand of lighting, brand and frequency of dusting, gutloads, humidity, temp, the cage in general, location in relation to other pets or house activity, etc.

Ah sorry, I just read and responded to the jackson's message you referred to. See if that brings up any ideas.

This sounds to me (IMHO) like some sort of inhalant poisoning...i.e. was any insecticide sprayed on or around cage? on or around feeder insects? The symptoms sound susiciously like a neurologic disorder brought on by peticides, especially as the chameleon seemed to recover, yet had another, almost like an epileptic seizure...

Was your cham exposed to any poisons??

Can't think of any poisons. There are 30 some other reptiles in the same area including some geckoes and amphibions that should have absorbed airborne toxins thru their skin. No other health problems with any other animals.

The devil is in the details isn't it? He had been transfered to a 30" tall mesh cage about 2 weeks before this started. 40 watt incandesant bulb for heat. Room temp 76F. 10.0 UVB 18" strip light. Dusting every 2 days with Miner-all. 1/2" crickets for food. SVL about 5".

A thought that occured to me after the post was that he was on the floor of the cage or hidden in the folage almost all the time after being moved. When he was in a tank with 10.0 at 15" he was fine. After being returned to a tank for treatment he was again put under 10.0 UV at a height of 15" from the tank floor. He got progressivly worse. We have had 2 days here in the 80's with bright sun so I put him outside for several hours each day. He is improving. Could the drop in UV intensity with the taller cage have caused this so fast? MBD?
