petsitting and need help...

randi Jul 21, 2003 08:42 AM

I'm pet sitting a red eyed tree frog and I'm a little worried about him. The owner is going to be away for a month and has left me an adult and a tadpole. They told me all their other frogs have died and didn't expect this one to last much longer either. I see that as a chance to hopefully save a life.
The adult has a strange grey spot on it's face. I've tried searching the web and haven't found any real information about what to do for this little guy.

What is the set up like? My first guess would be that they keep him too humid. But that is just a guess. It will be especially helpful if you can tell us what his set up is like, and how they cared for him.

I'm not too sure how they kept him. They did tell me he was in a large tank along with a bunch of other frogs that died. Since the owners are overseas for a month I can't reach them to find out more.
With putting a bit of ointment on the spot, which I got from my herp vet for a leopard gecko I rescued, it is already looking better. I will give my vet a call today to see if she can shed a bit more light on the subject.
Thanks!

It sounds like the owners have given up on it, which is not fair to the animal. The best thing you can do is to make sure that the set up is correct and ideal. Otherwise, the situation cannot be resolved without taking it to a vet.

More important than their habitat might be ... why did the others die? You said that the owners didn't expect him to last much longer because all their other frogs died. Later you said they were all in the same tank. Do you know why or how the others died? It could be that there is a parasite that the RETF caught from the others. Just a thought.

The frog unfortunately didn't make it. Since all the other frogs died I will let the owners know that they should give their tank a proper cleaning with a disinfectant to make sure if there is a parasite in the tank it will kill it off.

I have no idea what happened to the other frogs. The owner didn't seem to have much experience with them and didn't even know if they were keeping them properly. I'll be printing off information for them to be able to keep frogs properly. They had also given me a tadpole RETF that just sprouted it's back legs. I'm keeping a close eye on it to make sure it survives.

Thanks,
Randi
