NOISY CRICKETS

ron3090 Oct 16, 2005 05:24 PM

Since I have a Fat-tailed Gecko, I need to buy and feed it crickets on a regular basis. But 9/10 of the time, I get a noisy one in the bunch. Because of this, I hardly get any sleep at night. Can someone help me find a way to SHUT THHEM UP? >

LOL, only way to shut em up is to feed em to the Fat Tails
The reason they make this noise is to attract a mate. How warm is it where you keep the crickets? If you keep them someplace cool they won't make quite so much noise. Hope this helps some.

The thing is that they chirp in my fat-tails' cage, which is in my room, so I can't turn down the heat for fear of killing him!

LOL, Well sometimes we just have to suffer to keep the critters happy. I'd do as Eve suggested and maybe get some smaller crickets.

You could try getting a little "cricket keeper" and keep that with your crickets inside but in a different room and then feed the crickets to the gecko as they require them as opposed to keeping them all in the tank. The difference between 2 crickets and 10 can be enormous. I also find this usefull to gutload the crickets in the "cricket keeper" place a plastic bottle cap with a piece of cotton inside and drizzle with water so the crickets can drink but do not drown and another cap with cricket food. This might solve your problem and if not best of luck on your search -Dan

Three thousand crickets?????? You must have alot more lizards to feed than I thought. Do you raise your own?

Actually I breed some crickets and buy some when I am in need of certain sizes. Since I breed some lizards, pinheads and tiny crickets have to be available alot. Then mid/ to large have to be available for some of my other adult lizards.

I pretty much have a CREW to feed , LOL

Get roaches at blaberus.com from James. Very quite.

Can African fat-tailed geckoes eat roaches?

P.S. He is very picky.

ginebig Oct 18, 2005 04:31 PM

That's a thought. And roaches are "supposed" to be more nourishing than crickets. I'd try that then.

I also cannot stand the sound of chirping crickets. I agree that the smaller ones do not "crick", but sometimes only large are availabe, or preferable for larger critters. But...I found a solution (mildly unpleasant, but a surefire answer). Remove the wings. Not practical with large numbers (I've had to sift through 200 on a couple of occasions). I keep my animals in my bedroom also, and cannot, I mean no way it's possible, sleep with those darn things making all the racket. So, I usually put them in a larger plastic bag and sort out all the ones without wings into a smaller bag. The ones with wings can be dewinged with little difficulty, though older ones that aren't in good health tend to, ummm, well tear. So, I almost never get adult crickets if I can help it. It's a pain in the rear, and it makes me feel mildly psychopathic. Stick to 1/2 inch or lobster roaches if you can, but if you can't I just thought I'd give you another option, grisly though it is.
