Scale Rot?

Hoopy Jul 21, 2003 09:34 AM

What does scale rot look like? I have 1 female pastel that seems to soak way to much. Anyways, I put a very small water dish in her cage so she couldn't soak her complete body. She 2 to 4 scales on top of her head that have a funny look to them. They are not shiny and smooth lilke the rest of her scales? Could this be scale rot and should I be comcerned?

Scale rot is usually on the belly. I have had some snakes get spots on their head too it has never been a problem and comes off with the next shed.
Are you sure you do not have mites? Every time I have had a snake that soaks their whole body it has been right after I got them and they had mites. They soak to drown the mites and get relief from the itch. If you look close under their chin and around the eyes you can see small black or grey dots about the size of small pin tip. When I have had that I clean out the cage line it with newspaper and treat with prevent-o-mite that has always taken care of it. If you have more then one cage you probably need to treat all of them. Now I treat all incoming animals like they have mites and put them in isolation for a month (in a different room then my collection) and treat the cage with prevent before I put them in.
I hope this helps.
