Astro Turf....

phiber_optikx Oct 17, 2005 03:04 AM

I was just curious about how many of you use astro turf. Is it still concidered astro turf? I was wanting to use it for my custom cages because it would be so easy to clean (theoretically) which brings me to my next question. Is it easy to clean? I plan on having two 2'x2' per cage. Each cage will be 4x3. Can you just rinse it in the sink, add a little bleach, rinse and dry? does it dry well? Also, I plan on having a human heat pad under it. Would it heat well if set on low-med? This way i can feed my shy eaters in my cage with no worries. Also my last question. I have looked at walmart several times and can only find heat pads that have an automatic 2 hour timer. Anyone know where I can get one without the timer? Or better yet, a timer that isn't 24 hour? I want a timer that will run for 2 hours shut off for an hour and come back on for 2 more hours. as in, on 2 hours, off 1 hour, back on for 2 hours, etc. but I want it to do that constantly and not have to set the timer every day. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Yes but each manufacture calls it something else.

I was wanting to use it for my custom cages because it would be so easy to clean (theoretically) which brings me to my next question. Is it easy to clean?

I find its easy to clean but hard to sterilize you make the call.

Yes but I have never used bleach I don't know what it would do to the product. I used soap and didn't wash it in the sink but rolled it out on the drive and used a hose.

does it dry well?

Drip dry.

Also, I plan on having a human heat pad under it. Would it heat well if set on low-med?

It doesn't effect radient heat in my opinion althouh there are better conductors and better thermal mase products out there.

This way i can feed my shy eaters in my cage with no worries. Also my last question. I have looked at walmart several times and can only find heat pads that have an automatic 2 hour timer. Anyone know where I can get one without the timer?

Cut off the time and wire in your own most hardware stores sell Intermatic plug in timers that can be adapted to meet your needs.

There are timers on the market than can handle what you are asking simply search Intermatic this will show you better than I can decribe. But most pool timers can set more on off periods than the standard one on one off. I must warn you the more time functions you add the higher the price the cheap ones run for less than $20 The ones I use are around $60 and they go up even more.

Hope this helps a little

I tried to use this several years ago and after a couple of cleanings it had a foul odor. I stopped using it and have never tried it again. It was quick and easy to clean but didn't last as long as I had hoped for. The odor could have been removed with a strong bleach solution and soaking for an hour or so but that probably would have caused it to break down.
