Irian Jaya vs. Gigas

aziguana Oct 17, 2005 03:14 AM

I know you guys probably get this a lot but I was wondering which would be a better choice. I have had a BTS in the past but I am not sure what species it was and I am planning on getting another one soon. Is there any difference temperment wise? One more agressive than the other? Thanks

There are differences in temperments amoung the various species of blue tonques. The best site I have found that explains these differences.

I'd say an IJ would have a better temperament. I am currently keeping a male gigas, kinda aggresive, but bluffs rather than bites (i have never been bitten, except once on a feeding accident).

The only tiny thing about IJ's are (from a book i read), their bloodlines. Some people think they are one species, some other think they are a crossbreed to legalize shipping >.<

One way or another, they make excelent pets.

BTS RULE!!!!

My "babies" :
1.0.0 Indo BTS (Tiliqua gigas gigas)
0.0.1 Rainbow skinks (Mabuya multifasciata)
0.0.3 RES (Trachemys scripta elegans)
0.0.3 Amboina box turtles (Cuora amboinensis)
1.0.0 Chinese softshell (Trionyx sinensis)
1.0.0 Asian leaf turtle (Cyclemys dentata)
1.0.0 Leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius)
And still growing...

Most of the available Irian Jayas and Gigas are imported, unless you can find a breeder with CB babies.

We have Northerns and Easterns (long time CB bloodlines), as well as the IJ's and gigas. We have found the northerns to have the best temperment over-all. But there is always an exception to every rule, don't you know?

Tannibars are famed for being the fiesty ones. *LOL*

We were recently at a herp show (we have a booth there), and we had some of our baby northerns (from this summer). People were so surprised how handleable they were. Even the kids liked holding them.

Good luck in finding a good bluey companion!
