baby gtp

jimhellwig19 Oct 17, 2005 04:41 PM

i just got a baby gtp last week and feeeding time rolled around this week and she still hasn't touched the pinkie i put in there and the others are all dying off, so i'm a little worried b/c pinkies are hard to come by around here....so at this point i have several questions:
1. what do babies eat in the wild? could i give her roaches or crickets or super worms to tide her over?
2. other than tongs does anyone have any advice on how to get her to eat?
3. what is the best way to move her toward frozen mice?

1) how long have you had it?
2) how old is it?
3) cage temp/humidity?
4) live being left in overnight?

Put the rest of those pinkies in the freezer before they die off. They don't last long without food and water, a couple of days at the most. I’ve never had any problem switching a snake to frozen thawed. Warm them up to “live animal temps” and you should be OK. Bugs and worms are not on the GTP menu. Don’t worry that your snake hasn’t eaten in the one week since you got it. I think “feeding time has rolled around” on your schedule, not the snake’s schedule. Babies can be finicky eaters, especially in a new environment. Offer it a meal once a week, I wouldn’t worry about it not feeding for at least a month.

Your animal is no longer in the wild. There for you should give it the best care possible. DO NOT GIVE YOUR OR ANY PYTHON INSECTS!!

2. other than tongs does anyone have any advice on how to get her to eat?
There are hundreds of ways to get a stubborn snake to eat. Contact the person you got the animal from.

3. what is the best way to move her toward frozen mice?
Your chondro should already be on F/T rodents, again contact the person you got the animal from.

I HIGHLY suggest you read any general python care book. The questions you asked are very general and should be second nature to any snake owner. There is a gold mind of information regarding this species. For future refrence, please do not get an animal if you do not know how to properly care for it. This is a delicate species their care should be properly understood long before the animal lands in your care.

Here are some good resources for you.
