lizards hatching in the cage

robyn@ProExotics Oct 17, 2005 06:05 PM

not monitors, but cool lizards nonetheless, and a cool occurence relative to breeding and hatching...

we had Ornate Uro babies come up from the soil today, 200 days after the gravid female went down to lay.

setup in our 10 ft circular troughs, with 2 ft of DG soil, the babies look to be perhaps a week old, and they sure are hard to catch in such a large setup : )

we have other females that laid in the weeks after this first female, in other cages, so i hope to see more babies soon. one of the goals of our large setups with Ornate Uros was to see if we could hatch them in-situ, and while one success doesn't guarantee much, it is a great start. i was certainly starting to worry as time passed (55-65 days to hatch in the incubator).

we have counted about a dozen babies so far, but they keep darting back underground, so it is hard to keep track. babies are plump, healthy, and doing well. we have pulled them from the cage and started them back in small tanks, we will probably polish off the adult group with at least some of this stock.

That is really cool, I hope the rest of the eggs make it too. Very nice looking babies.

Gorgeous little tykes! Ive been looking at getting Uromastyx. How do you guys like them?

i like the Uros, they are interesting for sure, but i still prefer monitors overall.

the Uros are a different lizard, mostly subtle differences. stuff like the Ornates can be very colorful and fun to watch.

those baby uros look amazing. I hope this setup/idea keeps working out for you.

By the way...did they hatch with adults still in the setup? If so, any concern about cannibalism?

robyn@ProExotics Oct 19, 2005 02:31 PM

the adults were in the cage, but i didn't see any signs of aggression.

yeah, your lizards seem to be well-fed (from the pictures they look very plump), so canabalism probably wouldn't be much of a problem, and if there wasn't aggression, then it seems like it's working out fine. I'm sure if you tried that with a more carnivorous lizard, you would never even know that lizards had been born in there
