Did you look inside his mouth? Using a Q-tip or other soft object, lift open the mouth and look inside to see if there is any mucous strings or other cheesy-looking globs of stuff? A normal mouth should look pinkish-white and there should not be any excess of mucous or "stuff" in there. Let us know.

Could possibly be mouthrot, but it is not a symptom of RI.
without a look into the mouth, it could be alot of things, mouthrot, absessed tooth, infection of the gums, bite etc.
