Freezing Crickets

aziguana Oct 17, 2005 06:43 PM

I am soon going to receieve a shipment of 500 large crickets to my house. I was wondering if I could freeze them to preserve them. I have 2 large blue tongue skinks who I feed crickets to as part of their diet. Normally they eat their crickets dead in a bowl. Just before I feed the crickets to them, I crush their heads so the won't escape and get lost in the lizards terrariums. Can I instead just put the 500 crickets in a bage and freeze them until they are ready to be used? I don't like keeping them alive in a tub because most usually end up dying. Will freezing the crickets cause them to lose any nutrtional value or any thing like that? Thanks

The only time I froze crix intentionally was to slow them to roast them for some chocolate coating. The Boy Scouts loved them, btw.
My gut feeling is that thoroughly freezing them will turn them to mush, as in how they come delivered every now and then in winter time. Let us know if it works though.
