Gnats and more Gnats!

reptileshed Oct 18, 2005 12:14 PM

It doesn't matter how much time I spend cleaning cages, scrubbing floors, washing waterbowls....I alway end up dealing with those pesty gnats and sometimes.....if I don't find it soon enough...maggots. Can anyone offer ADVICE on how to get rid of them. And.....how to prevent them from coming back. I can lay a rat out to thaw for a couple hours and when it's time to feed, there are usually a few to be found on the rat. My snake room for the most part is clean and sometimes I'd even say sterile...but I just can't get rid of these pests. It's not like I feed salad to attract them...I only have to feed snakes.

Thanks in advance! Really!

I live in the south and have the same problem. They are in my house around my sinks and both computers. The only thing that will get rid of them is the upcoming colder weather.

I'm in the Great Midwest. There has to be a product or trick out there that someone can share other than wait for the cold weather.....although conditions are better in the winter.

My situation is exactly as you described. I'm about ready to declare them a dietary supplement for my snakes. Any idea on the nutritional content of a million gnats?

I've tried No-Pest strips with no luck. Fly paper catches them, and me...yuck. But more of me than them it seems.

There goes one now...sigh.

The worst I've had was about a couple hundered. I had missed a cage that had an uneaten mouse in it. Must have been there for 3 or 4 days. I don't know why I didn't smell it first.

Still....sounds like I'm not the only one tired of dealing with these pests....

I'm also not too fond of the flypaper trick...although...I'm getting ready to try it again. Any other thoughts?

This won't completely get rid of them but it will help control them. Try fly paper, the Gnats stick to it.

The method that I've been using is to get some sort of jar and fill it with vinegar. Put some sort of plastic wrap over the top and secure it with a rubber band. Poke a small hole in the top so the gnats can come in but not out so easily. Just let it sit and you'll soon notice lots of dead gnats in the vinegar. I started using this method several months ago and have not had much of a problem with them since.
Hope this helps.

I hate gnats, Ive never had them or had a problem but I dont like them. I know this post can't help you but should the weather already be cold in the midwest? Thats the only way all of them will be done for.

Pure genius if this works. I'm going to give it a shot right away.
THANKS!
