Crested Gecko in Terrarium / Aquarium Environment with Fire Belly toads.

toddkeesey Oct 18, 2005 02:07 PM

Hello, I have a custom made terrarium with an aquarium in the back. The aquarium is about 7 inces deep and has sloped sides on two sides, glass in the frount and a waterfall in the back I also have several fake plants. The terrarium has about one foot x 20 inces of floor space (excluding the space taken up by the terrarium) and has about 3 feet of vertical space (glass on three sides, rock waterfall on the back).

I was wondering if it would be possible to house a crested gecko in with the Fire Belly Toads. I was specifically wondering about the toxins. I am going to be runnning a fiter that will filter about 200 GPH, with a mechanical (foam) and biological (activated carbon) parts to it. The Fire Bellys and the Crested are of simalar size so eating on another shouldnt be a problem.

The temperature and lighting requirements are very simalar and the range of the toads would be resricted to the lower portion of the terrarium.

I have read alot of care sheets which about half suggest not housing the Fire Bellys with anything else about half do not mention anything. I was wondering if anyone has had experiance housing a Fire Belly with a crested, or has any information that might be relivant to me.

Thanks!

I know a wholesaler who had a sytem for turtles with about 40 holding tanks on it.
He put a fresh shipment of fire bellied toads in 1 tank and wiped out over 75% of his stock within 1 week.
They are more toxic than you think.

try touching your firebelly toad, and rubbing your eyes, or your nose, that will tell you what you should do or not ( or don't try it, and save yourself the pain)

Well, I have some firebellies myself, and while i haven't touched them and then my eyes (which I have made a concious effort not to do) I have however cleaned out there tank on multiple occaisions. For a while i had a half water/half land set up, and after cleaning this out my hands were numb and stinging so bad! So no, I would say definately do not do this. One other thing I would like to point out. I have cresteds as well as firebellies, and I believe whole heartedly that my adult crested could manage eating one of my firebellies, if she had a mind too. Just some FOOD for thought. lol.
