Surgery for egg bound P. m. Grandis

tazziesmommy Oct 18, 2005 04:56 PM

We took my grandis to the vet today and he said she is eggbound. He will be doing surgery either tonight or tomorrow morning. How can something so little survive surgery? Has anybody had one that made it through a surgery like this? Also, any ideas how this can happen with a proper cage and setup? She laid eggs previously in her bamboo, once in a plant and one I found broken and stuck to the glass. Something like egg binding isn't supposed to happen with proper husbandry, so I must have screwed up somewhere, right?

Sorry... I'm a mess! Sorry for the duplication. I posted in the Day Gecko forum too, but that only gets a few posts a month, so I wanted to try here too.

Have you asked the vet about Oxytocin to induce egg deposition?

Whatever the results, I hope your phelsuma gets well.

Oxytocin is often the first thing that comes to any vet's mind when anything related to dystocia comes up

I'm sure your grandis will do just fine. The vet must be squinting at this very moment that suture can get pretty tiny, it's like tying a strand of hair in a knot

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, she didn't make it. We had to rush her to the vet yesterday morning because when she tried to lay her eggs it only came partially out. They kept her in a incubator like thing with high humidity but when they went to get her to prep her for surgery, she was gone. He said she was extremely healthy with good weight and calcium sacs. I am absolutely devastated. Her mate is really upset too. He is looking everywhere for her. He goes by her favorite bamboo, shakes his head and makes little noises. It's so sad.

Thanks,
Lisa

Sorry to hear about the loss of your female P.grandis. Hopefully, you will be able to find another mate for your male.

Thank you. For her mate's sake, I probably need to try and find another grandis sooner rather than later. "Zeus" is almost as upset as I am. The vet said he'd settle down in about a week though. I hope so. They have been together for several years and were very attached.

Thanks again.
