Newly emerged baby Basti

slaytonp Oct 18, 2005 08:38 PM

I came home from a vacation to find a pleasant surprise--A baby pumilio Bastimentos just coming out of the water. Although I'd seen and photographed a tad on the Mom's back a few months ago, I had no idea where they put it, even though this particular brome axil is in plain sight and it must have been there all along. They have just moved three more tadpoles. I think one is in the middle vase of this same brome, but am not sure.

If you will notice, as I finally did, this little guy is not raised up as he should be. He had spindly leg syndrome--no front legs, only tiny buds, and he did not survive.

The causes of spindly leg syndrome have been discussed in the frognet forum extensively. It is a relatively frequent occurrence in Pumilios and the thumb nail egg feeders. Some think it is possibly caused by calcium/D3 deficiency in the mother, but that is unlikely in this case. Now I need to wait and see how the other three tads that have been recently transferred turn out.

In any event, this pleasant surprise turned out to have a sad ending.

I loved the pix of the tiny baby. It is so sad when there is something that cannot be fixed. Hope the other guys have a better and much longer life.

Hey Patti:

Sorry to hear about your little guy! He/She looked so beautiful in the picture you so nicely took. Let us know how the others do. Still a nice surprise to come back to from vacation, nonetheless!

Stick around Maggie--We need you. Give us some update on the sex life of your imitators. Have you ever encountered spindly leg with them?
